Diez años después: ante el nuevo milenio

After ten years, Savater decides to delight us with one more chapter, as if it had been necessary to add anything to his marvellous book!!
Taking into account the times we live in, he says that the key to enjoy a good life is to care about others. We must realize that we're social beings: we need to look after ourselves and, at the same time, take care of others since we belong to the same species. We need to leave aside stereotypes and recognize each other as what we are: humans.
Apart from this, he points out that we need to take care of our "house", our planet. I find this really important, inasmuch as many times governments think about making money at the expense of our environment. There are clear examples in our country such as the paper mills in Gualeguaychú, forests in the south or the jungle in Chaco and Salta... I wonder if they've ever stopped to think that they won't have enough time to spend all the money they've got by selling our country... our planet will be dead before that can happen

Caring for those who will come after us, and questioning whether "might is right" at all... two burning issues in today's world indeed, Andrea! The examples you've mentioned leave no questions about it, I'd say...

Now, how will you, an EFL teacher, contribute to that cause?

Love,
Gladys

I think I contribute to this cause by raising awareness among my students of these problems, by helping them become critical thinkers... It's my belief that little by little we can change some of the things that are wrong, from the very place in which we are...

Andrea

I do agree with you Andre, we are social beings in the first place, the rest comes afterwards. Anyway, some people do not care about this because they feel such hunger of power they turn blind towards the rest of humanity. You know my hope lies on the spiritual being of each of us and not the human side for you cannot trust human reasoning thus, we ( at least me) cannot depend on humans in power, I regret to say.

Last weekend I've seen the movie 'Happy Feet', have you seen it?
If nobody tries 'dancing' in a different way... we will loose everything we were used to have. Lets try to make the difference and the enviroment is not the exception.

Andre: well said! Does it help you at all if you know you're not alone in your aims?

Silvia: Savater has already suggested why some humans might be so hungry for power (remember Citizen Kane? How do you separate "Human" from "spirit", I wonder? To me, we're as much "spirit" as "reason" and "body"... Now, the idea that one of these elements should be prioritised over the other for an ethical life is just one possible ethical position, as we'll see in more detail when we review the history of ethics...

Yoha: I loved Happy Feet too... Excelllent alternative to the traditional version of "The Ugly Duckling", if you ask me!

Great to have met you all in cyberspace!
